Encaustic Evolution

Art has the marvelous ability to transform itself during the artists process, yet the stages and ability to completely remove or regenerate the piece you are working on depends on the chosen medium and the canvas or surface and may not always be forgiving of a fresh start or changed approach.

This can lead to the dreaded BCFS....Blank Canvas Fear Syndrome. Some artists never suffer from this affliction. Their artistic journey is filled with wild abandon. Their bravery frees them to march through the forest of the unknown stroke without trepidation.

For others, the clean canvas or starting point is a pristine chapel, meant to remain in its virginal sanctity until the worthy idea fully formed is bestowed from head to heart to hand to meet the canvas.

It isn't always the way. Art comes from different sources of inspiration. Sometimes all at once, sometimes fits and starts.

This is the appeal of encaustics. The medium is static and the medium is fluid. It allows you to think, yet not too long, as contemplation can freeze that thought into place before you have continued the stroke of your brush upon the board.

These properties, among others made this the medium perfect for me to explore.

I would like to welcome you on this journey as I explore materials, techniques and the changes in selected pieces as i discover the evolution of my works in progress.

  1. A very interesting take on how the medium allows for if not demands a less constrained approach to the process
